Day 2 towards Spain – Le Douhet, Pons, Sauternes, Bazas, Barbaste, Nerac, Lamontjoie, Ligardes, La Romieu

Day 2 towards Spain and we’re up early and keen to continue our journey. Our first stop was a brief pull in for a couple of photos of the private chateau at Le Douhet. From there on to the lovely Pons with it’s vast ‘donjon’. It’s such a picturesque place. Next we called in at Sauternes for our onboard lunch, at the same quiet rural stop we overnighted some years ago.

Bazas we have been to before as well, a larger, bastide town, but stopping to overlook the old mill and Roman bridge at Barbaste was a first for us. Behind the mill were what looked like a couple of rather nice restaurants! Wrong time of day to try!

From here on to Nerac with its Henry IV chateau beside the river with winding medieval back streets and open square. We got back on board and drive through more beautiful open gentle rolling hills of vibrant green in the sunshine. Next brief stop was at the small town of Lamontjoie for a brief stroll, a drive through Ligardes, which in fact looked very worthy of a visit, and finally for the day pulled in to the super free aire at La Romieu where we caught the last of the sun and a pre-supper stroll of this lovely bastide town where we plan to eat lunch out tomorrow.
